Premarital / Checkpoint Counseling

One of my favorite areas of counseling is helping couples figure out the best practices for relationships while they have time and space to really invest in their relationship. The beginning days of a relationship are all about building trust - do you still care about me when I’m angry, overwhelmed, when the flu hit me so hard that I’m lying on the floor with tissues hanging out of my nose.

We tend to gently ask “do you still care about me when…” and at some point we see enough consistency and care that we relax and the relationship becomes a warm, passionate, welcoming place to land. Or, as I call it, a relationship checkpoint. You *know* this person and you like this person and you’re invested in building a life together and you want to make sure your relationship has the legs needed to take you the distance.

My passion is helping couples learn and implement relationship patterns that will carry them through hard times and connect them during the best times. I help relationships understand why they respond to certain things in certain ways, learn new ways of communicating, build safety, and fight while on the same team.

I’ll design a counseling curriculum specifically for your relationship, but common topics include:

  • Understanding attachment styles/science

  • Learning to have conflict while being on the same team and not tearing each other down

  • Understanding values and beliefs

  • Identifying raw spots

  • Finances

  • In-laws

  • Sex

  • Addictions

  • Stress

  • Individual pursuits

  • Expressing needs

  • Having or not having kids / parenting styles

  • Building rituals of connection

  • Active listening, validation

  • Division of labor

  • Dreams and meanings

  • Recharging energy levels individually and within the relationship

  • Repairing the relationship after challenges and hurts

My goal is support you to enter this new stage of your relationship armed with the science behind relationships, interventions to strengthen your bond, and the knowledge that you and your partner can connect in good and bad times.

When you leave counseling my goal is for your to feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted.

If you’re invested in learning more or you want to see if I’d be a good fit as a counselor I offer 15 minute consultation calls and I’d love to hear how I can support you.
