Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is tailored for the person. The way you think and experience the world is unique. I honor that in my counseling and I work with you so you understand my primary theories and identify what interventions work best for you.
I have found that I nearly always incorporate some form of somatic experiencing because emotions live in our bodies and trauma takes us out of our bodies. So when clients talk about things that make them happy I encourage them to note what happens in their body - does your chest warm, do your breaths deepen, do you feel an urge to move? I use this approach too when clients reprocess trauma in order to allow the nervous system to release stored energy and increase feelings of safety.
I use EMDR therapy to assist clients in identify negative core beliefs, build resources, and untangle traumatic memories. Sometimes when something challenging has happened, our brains relieve the experience as if it's still happening. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation like eye movements or tapping to give your brain a chance to reprocess traumatic information in a more adaptive way and build positive beliefs.
I also use cognitive behavioral therapy because our thoughts frame the way we experience the world and how we talk to ourselves is how we feel about ourselves. I look for natural strengths and ways clients intuitively used coping skills. I use a multicultural and feminist approach to explore how systems affect mental health and oppression.
I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, disassociation and attachment.
